It’s a Rave

Kirkwood Community College Public Safety recommends that students download the app Rave Guardian on their phone. It’s free and available in both the Apple and Android app stores. It gives you Anonymous Tip Submission to Kirkwood Public Survey, Geo-Targeted Push Notifications, Call Directory with emergency numbers, Safety Timer to increase safety when you’re walking alone, Campus Safety Content Portal, and an Emergency Call Button. After you download it, open the app, you’ll have to enter your phone number, then enter a confirmation number they text to you, then double check they have found you at Kirkwood. Public Safety wishes everyone – students, staff, and faculty – will add this to their phone.

Campus Safety Checklist

Ensuring the safety of students and employees is a top security priority and everyone has a role to play in making the campus a safe and secure space. Here are a few ways you can make sure you’re always protecting yourself and contributing to the safe campus environment we’ve worked to cultivate.

Campus Security Checklist

On Campus:

  • Always walk in a group or with a friend if possible. If you do not have someone to walk with, contact Public Safety for an escort to your vehicle or location.
  • Choose well-lighted paths and avoid shortcuts. If you see an area light out on campus, please report it to Public Safety.
  • Locate the Public Safety phones on campus in case of an emergency. If you ever feel threatened, head immediately for the nearest Public Safety phone, lighted building, or group of people.
  • Avoid giving out your name, phone number, or other sensitive personal information to strangers.
  • If you carry cash, try not to bring attention to the cash you have on-hand.

Parking Lots:

  • Have your keys ready when you approach your vehicle and check the interior before entering.
  • Feel free to contact Public Safety for a security escort to your car from any building on campus.
  • Try to anticipate when you will return to your car – park beneath a light if you’ll return after dark.
  • If you see or suspect someone of driving under the influence, contact Public Safety immediately.

Your Vehicle:

  • Make sure you lock your vehicle when left unattended.
  • Windows on your vehicle should be rolled up completely.
  • It’s best to park vehicles in well-lit, highly traveled areas.
  • Try not to leave valuable items in view. Put bags and boxes in the trunk, don’t leave you cell phone in plain sight, and use a stereo with a removable faceplate.

Your Personal Property:

  • Make sure you lock your vehicle when left unattended.
  • Mark your property with an identifying number or engraving or recording the serial number so it can be identified if the item is ever stolen.
  • Don’t leave your property unattended on campus – even for a short period.
  • Keep close track of your textbooks during peak resale times – at the start and end of the semester.
  • Lock your purse or bag away while at work if possible.
  • Make sure to lock your locker when utilizing locker rooms on campus.
  • Ideally, it would be best to keep a record of all your valuables including a picture of jewelry or other highly valuable items.
