With all the news of identity theft and hack into financial institutions you might be feeling concerned. The break-in to Capitol One is only the latest in a long line of financial problems. Whether you are or not there are a couple of steps you can take.

  1. You can get 1 report for free each year from the 3 credit reporting companies (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion). Space out these reports and double check your credit record every four months.
  2. Freeze your credit reports. Iowans are now allowed to freeze and unfreeze their accounts for free. You have to freeze each of the 3 credit reporting companies separately. You’ll need them unfrozen when you need to use your credit, for instance to open a new credit card or to get a car loan or a mortgage.
