I was gone at a conference this last week so I had a big surprise when I walked back into the library. Elves had brought in two new pieces of furniture back by my favorite library painting.

A child-sized couch and a chair, not only provide right size seating, but also storage space for 2 baskets of board books and 2 baskets of blocks. They are located right near our children’s literature section and we hope it will make a more welcoming atmosphere for those Kirkwood students that bring their children along.

Where Did They Come From?

In this case those furniture bringing elves were the Pregnancy Assistance Grant Fund. This federal grant through the Office of Adolescent Health has brought a lot of great things to the Kirkwood campus. Its focus was on allowing Kirkwood to better support and assist parenting and expecting students.

The library furniture is a small part of a much bigger project. The grant allowed the Kirkwood food pantry (132 Iowa Hall) to expand. Today it offers Kirkwood students personal care items, interview clothing, winter coats, fresh produce, and more!

There have been several family events for students and their families, a dental clinic with the Kirkwood dental hygiene faculty and students, and over 8 educational seminars bringing to campus community agencies to discuss parenting topics and an overview of their services.

Stop on By!

So if you’ve been needing a good excuse to stretch your legs and walk on over to the Cedar Rapids Kirkwood library this is it! While you’re here look over our children’s literature collection and think about how it could be used in your class, set up an orientation with a librarian, drop off a text book for our reserve shelf — or just pick out a relaxing summer read or a DVD of a movie you’ve never seen.
