What’s A University Press?

University press book publishers are run in conjunction with a university. They often are in depth books about particular subjects. However, often these books don’t always reach the mainstream and often you won’t find them on the normal book search websites or even bookstores. So you are probably missing a lot of great books you’d be interested in on a whole range of topics.

The main way they are available is to tediously go in to check each individual press website. I was recently doing some searching and I found that there is actually a multiple press search you can use, but it’s kind of clunky. Still I wanted to share it because it’s much better than the alternative.

Are You Missing Out on Some Great Books? Search Here

The Association of American University Presses creates this search function. It’s across presses although it looks like it’s only member institutions. In other words it probably isn’t all university presses.

Go to this page:
http://www.aaupnet.org/news-a-publications/aaup-publications/university-press-books-for-libraries

Then click on a year. Within your chosen year you can:

  1. Search for a subject in the search box near the top of the page.
  2. Click on “Bibliography Contents” to bring up their clickable links to get to books related to a particular subject (by Dewey Number)
  3. Scroll to the very bottom of the Bibliography Contents list for each year and click on the list of Outstanding titles.

I’m going to be searching this more in the future and I hope you will too.
