Yes, of course students come to Kirkwood already able to read. But when students struggle with academic reading, how can we help them? A colleague sent me this article called “It’s Not Harry Potter” with a great set of step-by-step tips for instructors on how to effectively spend a little class time helping students read journal articles effectively.
Many of you may already be aware of another great resource for helping students reading college materials effectively. Kirkwood’s own Richard Johnson, writing faculty and director of the Iowa City Campus Writing Lab, made a video called “Successful College Reaing” that features excellent tips for students on reading habits and techniques that will help them get through their assigned reading efficiently and with greater retention of content.
